Mr. Gary Rosenthal, a native of聽northern Virginia, received his聽Bachelor鈥檚 Degree in Political聽Science and Geography and his聽Master鈥檚 Degree in Political聽Science and School Administration聽from Virginia Tech in Blacksburg,聽Virginia. He also has attended the聽Principal鈥檚 Institute at Harvard and聽has done extensive post-graduate聽work and research.
Mr. Rosenthal has been a Principal at all grade levels and has been a leader in reform and school-turnaround programs in public schools in Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, and most recently in Maine. An educational leader for over 30 years, he has served on the Board of Directors of the Harvard Principals鈥� Center (two- terms), the Chesapeake Center for the Coalition of Essential Schools and on visiting committees with the Southern, Middle States鈥� and New England Accreditation Associations. He has also served as a member and President of the Dorchester County, MD Board of Education; Rosenthal has been an Adjunct Professor of Graduate Education at Trinity University in Washington, DC, at the New England College in NH and currently teaches School Finance and Directs the Online Education Program at Saint Joseph鈥檚 College of Maine. In addition, Mr. Rosenthal has attended School Leadership Institutes at The College of William and Mary and Salisbury State University. Mr. Rosenthal previously served as the Assistant Superintendent and Curriculum Coordinator for the Sheepscot Valley RSU #12 in Maine, and as Superintendent of Schools for AOS #97 鈥� Winthrop/Fayette, a position from which he retired in 2018.
Mr. Rosenthal has been recognized by Harvard University for 鈥淪ignificant Contributions to the Professional Development of America鈥檚 School Leaders鈥�. In addition, he received the Comcast Communications 2002-2003 鈥淪chool Leadership and Student Achievement Award鈥�, and was nominated for the Paul G. Carlson Award, for work with DE Professional Development programs at the school and regional levels. In 2011, Mr. Rosenthal was recognized as the 鈥淕raduate Education Faculty Member of the Year鈥� by Saint Joseph鈥檚 College of Maine. In 2016, he was nominated by his school committee for the 鈥淎ASA Superintendent of the Year鈥� award and also for the Ed Week 鈥淟eaders to Learn From鈥� recognition.
Mr. Rosenthal is a member of The Academy of Political Science, Phi Delta Kappa, The Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, The American Association of School Administrators, the MSSA, and The Christian Legal Society. He also serves on the Board of Directors of the Snow Pond Music Academy in Maine.
